Medieval Paint Found At St Mary's Church, Kilkenny, Ireland

An interesting recent conservation project involved a small area of medieval wall painting discovered during building works in early 2015 at St Mary’s Church in Kilkenny, Ireland.

The very fragile medieval wall painting fragments had been covered up by a later infill wall and emergency stabilisation treatments were necessary as part of the process of revealing them in order to carry out an initial assessment of their condition and significance. During the initial phase of work on site the remainder of the infill wall was removed and further medieval plaster revealed, requiring the application of temporary facings and the installation of a protective polystyrene and timber support to facilitate the continuation of building work in the vicinity.

An assessment report was produced in May 2015 which described the nature of the wall painting and included proposals for further conservation works. The recent work included further stabilisation, uncovering to reveal further areas of painted decoration and subsequent cleaning and conservation.
