Verrio Fragment Conservation Underway


A section of detached wall painting reputed to be by Antonio Verrio (c.1639-1707) and a fragment from one of the ceilings of Windsor Castle was brought into the studio to be examined.

The painting had been restored on several occasions in the past and displayed a wide variety and various degrees of deterioration including accumulation of dirt, discolouration of an old varnish layer, poor quality past repairs and retouching as well as physical damage and loss. The painting was examined in normal and UV light and the results of discrete cleaning tests indicated that heavy-handed past restoration could be removed to reveal the original colour.
